Lately, I have been seeing brussels sprouts everywhere on menus. Not so much in Hawaii, but more so on the mainland. I don’t really have any memories eating brussels sprouts growing up, since it is non-existent in Chinese cooking, but I always thought they looked like cute little cabbages. I didn’t know much about brussels sprouts except that kids all across America hated this vegetable.
On my last recent trip to NYC, my friends and I ordered a side of brussels sprouts with our dinner at The Boil. I don’t remember what was in it, but I do remember it tasted amazing. So when I went home, I wanted to make brussels sprouts. I found a great recipe that roasts the brussels sprouts with bacon. Mmmm, bacon…
It is true what they say. Everything tastes better with bacon. Not sure who “they” are but “they” know what “they” are talking about! Brussels sprouts are generally bitter, but the bacon somehow complements the bitterness nicely. Maybe it is the bacon fat, maybe it is the crunchy bacon bits, but nevertheless this is really tasty!
Brussels sprouts are grown on stalks. I remember seeing them sold like that at Whole Foods one time. However, when I went to Whole Foods, they were removed from the stalks. I removed some of the outer leaves on some of them and rinsed them before cutting into halves.
Brussels sprouts are high in Vitamins C and K, and also contains moderate amounts of Vitamin B, essential minerals and dietary fiber. Good stuff.
After cutting them in halves, I tossed them with melted butter, salt and pepper. Then placed the brussels sprouts on a baking sheet lined with foil and sprinkled cut up bacon on top.
As it was roasting, it smelled so good in my apartment! It only took 32 minutes to cook and it was so tasty! This dish is definitely a good one to bring to a BBQ or potluck and will convince kids all across America to love brussels sprouts for sure!
